How To Choose A Cat

Posted on: August 17, 2011

Picking a cat, like picking any pet, requires some serious thought. For tips, read through this guide on how to choose a cat.

Introduction

Before considering a pet, you should be sure that you are prepared to give the animal a good home. Cats require plenty of love and companionship -- it is a myth that they are okay just left alone in the house. While they are less needy than dogs, they still crave love and affection. Also, keep in mind that you must be prepared to clean the cat's litter box regularly.

Step 1: Think About Your Needs

Make a list of the traits that are most important to you. Do you care if your cat sheds? Do you have small children that may be hurt by a cat that is too aggressive? How affectionate do you want your cat to be? These are all things to take into consideration when getting ready to choose your cat.

Step 2: Go to the Animal Shelter

Every city has hundreds, if not thousands, of cats that need homes. Instead of buying a cat from a pet store, adopt from your local animal shelter. You may be saving an animal's life, and as an added bonus you can save hundreds of dollars in the process.

Step 3: Inspect the Cats

When looking at cats to adopt, consider the following:

  1. Eyes should be clear and bright
  2. Ears should not have any odors or brown wax
  3. Nose should not run
  4. Breathing should sound healthy -- no wheezing
  5. Cat should respond well to your presence
  6. Pick up the cat, and note reaction
